From wikipedia: Essential parts of all design styles are concept, color, proportion, balance, ergonomics and function of design. Although all styles differentiate their usage of each of these, they are all an integral part of the overall look and feel of a room or space. Designers incorporate the seven elements of design to create and enhance style: form, mass, shape, line, color, texture and pattern.

That said, lets talk about style preferences. My advice is to keep the big pieces, i.e. sofas, diningroom sets and other pricey furniture items as simple as possible. The floral pattern, wood trimmed sofa that fits so well into your country themed look today may not work down the road when you decide that you now want a more asian feel. Simple lines, simple colors and simple forms help you to reinvent a room whenever you please. And lets face it, most of us fall into that "eclectic" style of design. You may love a Art Deco look but somehow that table you inherited from grandma kind of throws it off.

In a lot of cases, your moving into a home that has already been occupied by your new boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife for a few years. Trying to completely redo the interior can cause a lot of stress and arguments. Try stripping the room bare and bring back 1 piece at a time until you get a feel that you like. Put the others into storage (if you have the room), but try to save them for future use. Repaint and reorganize. Now, hopefully, you have a space that incorporates both your tastes and styles.

Our Design Solutions are geared towards giving you a sample of products that can help you get started to design a certain "feel" for a room. The use of color and accent pieces can turn any room into the style that you crave. Also keep in mind the style and architecture of the space you are using. Contemporary pieces might not work well in a 1920's bungalow with all of the heavy wood trim and accents that are inherent with that time period. There are some great software programs on the market that can help you recreate the space and then decorate it before you buy a single item.

Keep in mind that many pieces span more than one particular style. What is Asian, can also be considered Contemporary. Tropical and Exotic can blend to form a light and inviting room.
