The condo I use to
live in had these great 6 foot tall casement windows. The problem?
Except for the window sill, the whole casement was simply your standard
dry wall and the windows had metal frames. This caused a whole other
set of problems whenever the frames would frost up and then thaw. The
dry wall was stained and even rotting in places. Also, the shades had
been installed near the front of the casement giving the walls a very
flat white look whenever they were closed. My solution? A nice grade of
plywood to line the inside of the casements, stained to match the
framing I did on the outside. I then caulked around the window and
sealed it all with a polyurethane. No more water problems! I also reset
the blinds so that they were closer to the inside of the casement. Now
the room had a more interesting look when they were closed. All of this
was done use hand tools, with the exception of a nail gun.
